 | Canoes
A common question we're asked is "What's the difference between a canoe and a kayak?". Well the answer depends on who you ask. Our definition is 'generally':
A kayak tapers in where the gunwales meet the deck, giving some protection from chop and sun and are they are usually paddled using a double bladed paddle whereas a canoe is open at the top (doesn't really have a deck, except at bow and stern) allowing for more storage and is usually paddled using a single bladed paddle.
To complicate matters you do get enclosed canoes and you also get open kayaks, each which can be paddled with either a single or double bladed paddle, so don't lose any sleep over the difference between a canoe and a kayak, they are both heaps of fun.
In today's world there is not much calling for canoes because compared to kayaks they are relatively big, heavy, clumsy and unstable, however they do offer more storage volume than most kayaks so there is still a small market for them.
Canoes are a great alternative if you're not particularly interested in speed but rather stability and carrying capacity. Because canoes are open at the top they can take heaps more gear and up to four people (in some cases).
