Recreation
Recreational Kayaks : Sit-in or sit-on for short distance paddling, fun, exercise, stability, comfort. Speed not essential, for the family or individual.
Characteristically these craft will be shorter and wider than their touring counterparts, for added stability.
Touring
Touring Kayaks : For longer distance paddling (several hours at a time), day trips or over-nighters on flat or semi-protected waters (creeks, lagoons, bays, esturies). Something sleek and fast that will get you from A to B in good time, with room to pack a picnic or even your tent plus gear.
Usually these craft are somewhere between 3.8 and 4.8m in length.
If you've been told that you need a sea kayak for closed water paddling (such as Brisbane Waters) then you've been misinformed.
Sea Kayaking
Sea Kayaks : A craft designed specifically for sea touring and expeditions, that can handle surf and swell, perhaps something to paddle along the coast with enough storage for day trips, over-nighters or multi-day trips.
This craft will usually be over 4.5m in length and have a distinctly up-turned bow for lift into oncoming swell and to prevent nose-dive when riding the wave.
Kayak Fishing
Fishing Kayaks : Something to give you that edge to get to where the fishing boats cannot reach, a kayak that you can kit out with rod holders, heaps of gear and somewhere to put your catch.
Fishing kayaks tend to be wide and stable with heaps of storage and gadgets galore.
Surf Kayaking
Kayak surfing : Something designed specifically to handle a bit of rough water and catch a wave or two, or alternatively hit the slopes and do a bit of white-water.
These kayaks tend to be flat-bottomed and short for high manoeuvrability. they are not particularly good for longer distance paddling on flat water.
Some recreational kayaks are quite good in the surf.
Exercise & Fitness
Exercise and Training : Wanting something specifically to give you a good workout and travel some distance?
You'd be looking for something long and sleek and not necessarily all that stable.
Canoeing & Camping
Canoes : Something with enough capacity for the whole family including your dog and heaps of camping gear.
Generally canoes are wide, deep and built for taking a load, not for speed, although they are tough and can handle down-river rapids.
Because of their width canoes are usually paddled with a single bladed paddle.
Folding Kayaks and Inflatables
While the concept of having a kayak that is light and packs into a bag for easy transport sounds great, the reality is that the NSW coastline is simply not compatible with these sorts of craft.
A close encounter with an oyster will have you wishing you had bought plastic. For this reason we do not carry folding kayaks or inflatables.
